A rousing evening of instrumental guitar music has been arranged by three of Portland’s brightest young talents: Andrew Gorny, Brooks Robertson and Chance Hayden. Each coming from a unique background and telling a story through their instrument, they collectively pool a wealth of sounds from disparate corners of the musical world. Gorny, who’s part of a very small group of players today that carry the torch of the innovative Michael Hedges, brings a contemporary fingerstyle approach to his own spirited original works. Robertson, with equally stunning fingerstyle technique, updates the tradition of country gentlemen such as Chet Atkins and Merle Travis through the teachings of his late mentor Buster B. Jones. Hayden, the wildcard electric flat-picker of the trio, demonstrates a mature adaptability that shows signs of his jazz upbringing and eclectic work as a sideman to numerous artists. Andrew, Brooks and Chance will each perform solo works while also coming together as a trio and in duo variations. Fans of guitar music and fellow guitarists alike shouldn’t dare miss this rare event showcasing a wide palate of instrument’s most distinctive colors.
